Dengler Takes Home the Zimmermann Cup

ENGLISHTOWN, NJWhile many people were enjoying the last weekend of the summer, the die-hard motocross racers of the Northeast came to Raceway Park for the 13th annual Vet and Vintage Reunion. The rare Saturday event was a special one in many ways. Classes were run for many Vintage classes and Veteran’s classes, and there was even a special class for police and firefighters, but the premier class of the day was the race for the Bruce Zimmermann Memorial Cup.

Zimmermann was a well-liked rider who passed away several years ago and has been honored by his friends at the track with this memorial race. This weekend’s race marked the seventh annual event, which has been won in the past by many of Raceway Park’s fastest Veteran racers.

Joel Dengler, one of the area’s fastest riders, used to come to the races with his dad, Bruce, when he raced against Zimmermann. Now Joel comes to the track with his family, but the cup has been missing from his mantle. That was, until this year. The Trapani Racing/Dragon Optical-sponsored Honda rider told himself that this was the year to add the cup to his collection. Although Dengler has taken some time off this season, he picked up his old speed quickly. Dengler took the victory in both Over 30 Expert motos and etched his name into Raceway Park history by getting his name on the cup.

One of the area’s fastest Over 40 Expert riders, Rick Rosseter, proved that you don’t need a current-model bike to jump all the big jumps. In the Evolution 201cc-Open A class, Rosseter took his circa-1980 Can-Am 250 (he’s not really sure what year it was made) to the overall victory by convincingly winning both of his motos. Rosseter had the bright orange machine airing out the “Plunge” and was even jumping the “Psycho Double” in the middle of the track.

In the special Firefighter/Police Officer class, Joe Pateman was the top rider in both motos, giving him the overall.
